Peter Young Counselling

About Peter

Misty WalkI studied Social Work in the early 1980’s and for 20 years I worked in a variety of mainly policy and management roles in human service organisations.  I completed a Master of Philosophy, and spent some time working in social research.  Before leaving this area of work I was a senior manager on the board of a large government department.  This period of my life helped me to appreciate the pressures experienced by people who work in senior management, and the importance of achieving balance in one's life.

In 2008 I changed direction.  I left senior management and returned to social work, initially working with families with young children with a disability.  I now work as a lecturer in the School of Human Services and Social Work at Griffith University.

In 2009 I started my own private counselling practice, and in late 2009 I was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy.  I am currently studying towards my Masters degree through Gestalt Therapy Brisbane. I have also trained in Psychological First Aid through Lifeline, and am available to participate as a counsellor in community recovery response work.

I am married with two adult children.  I try to maintain balance in my life, and in particular as I get older I have discovered the importance of making time for exercise, relationships, and for enjoyment.

I am a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and comply with that organisations professional ethics and ongoing professional development requirements.  I have full professional indemnity insurance as a social worker.  I am also a student member of the professional association of Gestalt therapists - Gestalt Australia and New Zealand (GANZ).
